The Dawgmeister's Good Works of the Week
featured weekly during the football season to encourage your support of worthy organizations

The Weekend Forecast is offered as a free service to its readers; neither the Dawgbone nor The Dawgmeister profits financially from its publication. If you read the Forecast and want to contribute something back to our communities, please consider making a donation to these Good Works services. There are many people living in difficult circumstances, and every dollar helps to support them through another day, week, month, and year. The Dawgmeister pledges $10 to each organization featured for its Good Works throughout the football season. Please consider doing the same yourself.

In the words of the Watsons, "We know the importance of having a strong faith in God, in yourself, and in your talents. Moreover, we have been called to give back what we have been blessed with to those who are in need. Even while dating at the University of Georgia we routinely participated in community service; we knew in our hearts the importance of service, giving, and building relationships. These values were instilled in us from an early age and are the same values we will instill in our kids to hopefully become part of our legacy." DONATE HERE

The Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief provides support for those affected by Hurricane Matthew. I am choosing this as the first of several hurricane relief programs to be featured this fall, not because I wish to promote a specific religion, but because they promise that “100% of your donation goes directly to the relief efforts!” In one of the most pathetic and shameful areas of human life, there are already scammers setting up fraudulent disaster relief collections that are designed to take your well-intentioned gifts and put them in the pockets of despicable lowlifes who would profit from other people's calamities via these ripoffs. Whether you send your money to the Baptists or somewhere else, please vet the recipient so that you are getting your donations to the people who desperately need it. DONATE HERE

The Catholic Relief Services has set up a Hurricane Matthew relief fund to provide shelter, water, and hygiene supplies to victims. The mission of The Ark is the same today as it was when it first opened its doors back in 1989: to continue to fulfill the vision of its founders by being an efficient, effective way for the religious community to pool resources and help people find self-sufficiency with hope and self-respect in the face of economic hardship. The Ark acts as an advocate for neighbors (the term used for The Ark's clients) and offers help using its own funds, as well as monies, services and resources from other social service agencies and private charities in the community. The assistance our neighbors receive from The Ark prevents homelessness and loss of utilities. The Ark serves the low-income citizens of Athens Clarke and surrounding counties who are facing financial emergencies and are struggling to meet life's basic needs. These include people who are working in one or more low-wage jobs, disabled or elderly and living on fixed incomes, facing increasing costs of living, stagnant wages and a lack of affordable housing and often without a network of support. Many of our neighbors live paycheck to paycheck, making difficult choices on a daily basis among rent, utilities, food, health care, day care and so much more. An unexpected expense can throw these families into financial crisis. When that happens, many of these people turn to the Ark. Since opening in 1989, the Ark has provided over $1,000,000 in financial assistance to over 35,000 individuals and families in need and continues to serve as an extension of over 30 local religious congregations representing different religious traditions. These congregations support The Ark with financial and human (volunteer) resources.

Build for Devon provides financial support for Devon Gales, Southern University football player who suffered a terrible injury in Sanford Stadium that left him paralyzed. UGA fans have adopted Devon as a Dawg for Life, yet his needs extend well beyond emotional support. Marshall Morgan's mother Dana has said, "Georgia Nation showed their support in a big way after the accident. Those funds went to paying for living expenses such as an apartment in Atlanta, for Tish and Devon. They needed to be near the Shepherd Center. Then six months after the tragedy, two brothers stepped up and presented Devon with a promise at a UGA press conference. They looked at the Gales and said, "We are going to build you a house." They also said in the same press conference (which can be viewed on YouTube), "we'e not going to leave you." One year later they broke their promise and they did leave them and the Gales never said a word. After the brothers backed out.. a house fund was started. The non-profit fund has approximately $130,000. in it. To build the kind of house Devon needs require it is estimated to be in the $500,000. range. This G-DAY can we make this home a reality for this family? I believe with all my heart we can if everyone gives whatever they are able to give. No gift is to small…this house needs to happen. Please don't wait for someone else who has more money to do it because that someone else may never do it." Books for Keeps (BFK), which since 2009 has given more than 260,000 books to children from low-income families in grades Pre-K through 12. For 11 months of the year, we collect, inspect, sort, and box books, only to give them all away each May. Books we can't use are sold at our annual BFK Book Sale each August. Books for Keeps' primary program is a research-based effort to end "summer slide," the learning loss suffered by many children when they are away from school. Children from low-income families are disproportionately affected by this loss, often due to a simple lack of access to books. Many children cannot or do not access their public libraries for reasons related to geography, transportation, or something as simple as an inability to pay fines for lost books. By middle school, the children from these families may be three grade-levels behind their peers. That gap is nearly insurmountable, and negatively affects their chances of graduating high school. Books for Keeps bridges the gap by giving them high-quality, exciting books with contemporary titles. It's a strategy proven to have a similar impact to attending summer school, but at a fraction of the cost. DONATE HERE

FoodFinder is a safe, secure and award-winning mobile and web app that gives food-insecure children and their families a way to find free food assistance programs quickly. A news story that ran in 2013 started it all. This segment profiled two children who were living out of truck with their father. They were forced to live there because medical bills for the children's late mother cost the family everything. One, a 12-year-old girl, and her brother, 10 years old, looked like normal kids. Even so, they had to get ready for school in the bathrooms of public libraries and gas stations. They didn't always have food to eat every night. Even as the economy was improving after the Great Recession, the problems facing the least fortunate in America had not improved at all. Jack Griffin, a Georgia high school student at the time, saw this news story and decided to do something about it. He wanted to help kids like the ones he saw on TV but around where he went to school and around where he lived. He initially searched online for places to volunteer at, but the results he found weren't what he was expecting. His search ended up at a bunch of confusing websites, none of which gave him a clear answer as to how, when, or where he could help. This seemed entirely more complicated than it needed to be. Jack thought to himself, "What if I was a kid who actually needed the help that these shelters and pantries offer?" He then had a peculiar idea. Instead of volunteering somewhere, maybe I could help families in need by making it as easy as it should be to find food pantries, kitchens, and shelters. And that's how FoodFinder was born. Doc's Healing Hives Veteran's Apiary was established when Tim Doherty redeployed from Afghanistan in 2016 and had a shoulder and a bicep that would need five surgical repairs to be fixed. As he waited for surgery to be approved and scheduled, he began to experience the symptom of Transition Disorder and PTSD; meanwhile he had the opportunity to work with his sister as she cared for her honey bees at Redoubt Farm. He has founded a non-profit, Doc's Healing Hives and Honey Inc. to help veterans through the therapeutic power of beekeeping. Each veteran admitted into the program will receive beekeeping equipment and training, a colony of honey bees, a beehive, and mentorship. Tim is requesting donations to establish the apiary where they will have a safe bee yard to raise ten colonies of honeybees. These honey bees will be donated from bee removal companies or captured swarms. Please help other veterans heal.

Everybody Wins! Atlanta
Everybody Wins! founder, Arthur Tannenbaum, and his wife Phyllis had always read aloud to their children. Reading aloud was an important time to come together after a long day. It helped the Tannenbaums instill a lifelong love of reading in their children. Trelease wrote that reading aloud to children was the single most important factor in improving children's literacy skills - but what happened to those children who never had that opportunity?
Arthur saw a chance to make a difference. His idea was simple: visit a neighborhood school once a week during lunchtime to read with a child. He quickly recruited four co-workers to join him at his weekly Power Lunch. Soon after, the volunteers' impact became obvious. Children in the program were learning to love reading, they were gaining self-confidence, and they were becoming better readers. This simple program was enormously powerful.
Soon, volunteers from other companies were joining in. In its second year, Arthur's lunchtime reading program grew to two companies - five companies - ten companies. In 1991, three years after his first Power Lunch, Arthur retired from his accounting job and founded Everybody Wins! as a non-profit organization.
In 1997, Everybody Wins! Atlanta was founded, serving the students of Hope-Hill Elementary School through the Power Lunch program. For over 18 years, Everybody Wins! Atlanta has been devoted to improving the reading skills and developing a love of reading in students who are reading below grade level, giving them a greater chance for success in school and expanding their life horizon.

At that time, she began a needs assessment dialogue with Joyce Slaughter, the mother of one of Bobbie's students. As a result of the needs assessment, they formed an advisory board. Having heard of Tommy Nobis' commitment to the Special Olympics and people with disabilities, the board approached the Atlanta Falcons All Pro Linebacker for support and named the project Tommy Nobis Center. Cobb Bar Community Service Fund
The Cobb Bar Community Service Fund was created and established by the Cobb County Bar Association to allow our Association the ability to serve the Cobb community through indirect and direct support of families in need, with special emphasis on direct support of families in an emergency situation. We coordinate these efforts with the Cobb and Marietta School Systems and the social services counselors in these local schools. Quite literally, the direct support provided by the Children's Emergency Fund is sometimes the only difference between a family with children living under a roof, or becoming homeless with no options but a shelter. The Children's Emergency fund was started to raise money for families throughout our community, families who are in crisis. This may be due to Mom or Dad being laid off from work, being injured, suffering a severe illness, or other uncontrollable situations. We offer a one time financial grant to assist with bills, clothing, housing, etc., to get them back on their feet or keep them from falling behind. With the support of businesses and organizations and the assistance of local social workers, we are able to keep the lights on for financially desperate families, provide eyeglasses to schoolchildren, and even keep whole families in their homes and off the streets (all checks are mailed directly to the service provider). Everyone needs a helping hand at times, and this is a great way to lend that helping hand to the members of your own community who need it most.

HEY!
We don't believe that our young people need to sit and wait for the leadership baton to be passed to them; it's time for them to start running and take it! HEY! was created to cultivate, encourage and mentor young people to identify and meet the needs of their ever changing world. With this in mind, HEY! focuses on three initiatives to address those needs: Sport For Good S.T.E.A.M., the EMPOWERED! Leadership Academy, and the HEY! Let's Read! Book Festival for Children of Color. In addition, we are adamant about meeting the needs of the young people serve as those needs arise. While being mission driven is important to an organization, being able to pivot based on what our youth need is paramount to the success of HEY! As a result, our current needs based initiative is focused on providing alternatives and options for the "ATL Water Boyz" while helping to change the narrative of young black male youth in the city of Atlanta.

Drawchange
DrawChange serves children living in homeless shelters and refugee children, helping them to create art projects centered around sharing with them a vehicle to visualize a break from the cycle of poverty. We empower them to reach their dreams while building confidence. Self-confidence is a sustaining emotional anchor that carries children through times of turmoil and transition that they encounter during the cycle of homelessness and poverty. Our desired outcome when creating art with the children is to provide happiness, awareness of self, empowerment, and a sense of belonging. Through our programs, we prove to the children that you can attain anything you can imagine. Within the United States, we currently have programs in Atlanta, Orlando, and Tucson.

Atlanta is #1, but this time, it's not a good thing. Atlanta is the worst in the nation for income inequality. In order to thrive as a region and a community, it must be addressed. Our region will see even greater growth when all residents have an equal and equitable opportunity to learn, work, civically engage and contribute to a healthy, just, thriving and prosperous community. Blankies 4 My Buddies. Our mission is to provide an extra dose of comfort to kids who need it. Whether we're collecting blankets, books, or food, we strive to empower kids and their families who are dealing with difficult situations like illness, loss, grief, food insecurity, and homelessness. We initiate projects we believe will make their load lighter.
What We Do
Grief Programs - B4MB raises awareness about the needs of children and teens who are grieving a death and provides education and resources for the parents and guardians who support them. Our programming includes community crisis support, grief support groups, school education sessions, professional workshops, and trainings.
Blanket Donations - We donate blankets to individual kids facing challenging situations and organizations that serve those kids.
Youth Initiatives - Through our initiatives, we offer opportunities for youth to make an impact in their own communities.
School Education Sessions - If a tragedy occurs in the school community (a student or teacher dies; there is a mass shooting in the area), B4MB would be able to go into the school to help children cope with grief, and teach them how to be sensitive to those who are grieving.
Professional Workshops - We host professional workshops and trainings for those working with children who have experienced grief or loss.
Events - We host food giveaways, book giveaways, blanket drives, and more to bring communities together to help one another and to inspire youth to get involved.

The Athens Area Diaper Bank
Diapers cost over $1,000 every year, a cost that nearly 1 in 2 families struggle with in our country. Government assistance programs, like food stamps, Medicaid, and WIC, do NOT cover diapers. There are over 8,000 children at risk of diaper need in the Athens, GA community.
WHAT IS THE FALL-OUT OF DIAPER NEED?
PHYSICAL: When families struggle to afford diapers, they report re-using soiled diapers or keeping a baby in a dirty diaper too long. This can lead to persistent diaper rash, UTIs, and staph infections, as well as the associated medical costs.
GENERAL WELL-BEING: When families struggle to afford diapers, they must decide between buying diapers or other basic needs like food and rent.
FOOD INSECURITY: 28% of parents who report experiencing diaper need say that they skip their own meals in order to afford diapers.
MENTAL: 70% of parents who report experiencing diaper need say they feel stressed or anxious about their responsibilities as a parent. 53% say they feel judged negatively because they could not afford diapers.
EMOTIONAL: Diaper need is correlated with maternal stress and mental health need.
SOCIAL: Without clean diapers, babies are not able to participate in early childhood education and social opportunities.
ECONOMIC: Without a supply of clean diapers, families can't send their babies to daycare. Without daycare, families can't go to work or school. By the numbers: 25% of parents experiencing diaper need have missed an average of 5.1 days of work each month because they didn't have enough diapers.
